Prof. Dr. Öztürk who studies on the reasons of global warming at glacier continent which attracks scientists attention because of the fact that it is still undiscovered, stated that he had difficulties mostly getting used to 22 hour daylight in the continent that he went with Shirase, Japanese icebreaker research vessel.
Saying that days were starting too early in Japanese research vessel Prof. Dr. Öztürk, “After morning sport, our shift started at 7.30 am and continued untill late hours of night. We took at least 3000 calorie food everyday. Carrying helmet, rope and telephone is a must as precaution for snowstorm. I washed the dishes, cooked meal even cleaned the deck. Because even the head of the science comittee did these things in this limited, difficult facilities. Nobody hesitated to washing dishes because everybody in this continent is equal and science lover” he said.
Emphasising that a lot of species can be seen in Antarctica now because of global warming, Prof Dr. Öztürk said “It is sad and surprising that mussel, consumed in Turkey fondly and can be seen in tropical climate, now can be seen in Antarctica whose environment is just glacier. They came here sticking the ships and with ballast water. Mussel’s occurence shows that it is time to make the move for earth.”
