The 96th Year Anniversary Celebrations of the Turkish Republic Were Held

The Declaration of the Turkish Republic and the National Spirit on Its 96th Anniversary Program was held on 31 of October in Istanbul University Rectorate Building Blue Hall.

IU Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak, Manager of the Department of Atatürk Principles and History of Revolution Prof. Dr. Mustafa Budak, President of the Student Council Emir Alp Turgut and student of Political Sciences student Kürşat Mücahit Topçugil attended the program as speakers along with the IU Vice Rectors, IU Secretary General and Assistants to Secretary General.

“Turkish Republic is the sacred battle that Turkish nation fought for independence”

Giving his speech for The Declaration of the Turkish Republic and the National Spirit On Its 96th Anniversary Program IU Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak stated that he was proud of being in national unity and he celebrated the public’s Republic Day.
IU Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak continued his words as: “The fundamental particularity of the Republic Day is that it shows the battle of Turkish nation fought for independence. I would also like to specify on this special day that we gathered together for the 96th anniversary of the Turkish Republic that this republic is not established in one day. Having its roots deep and that is why attacked many times since the day it was established, Turkish Republic managed to survive them all getting more powerful even better than before. The best example to that, as we all know, is the War of Independence. Back then, even though many countries thought that our country would die out, Turkish nation arose as a new state in consequence of their great struggle. As it is known, the War of Independence, which was conducted by Ghazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk with a great faith and determination despite all the impossibilities, resulted in a unique victory. And this victory is on the books as an important milestone of our history.”

“The unity is the greatest strength that Turkish Republic has”

Emphasizing the Turkish nation’s deep-rooted history and experience in governing IU Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak, “Turkish Republic’s greatest strength is the unity and the solidarity that the community and the institutions that represent it displayed. There is no other nation in the world with such deep, extensive and continuous governing experience. This strength is not comparable with money, technology or other opportunities. I believe that it is our duty to remind those facts to those who do not understand our country’s and nation’s ancient history and current power.

“National and religious holidays raises the national spirit”

Manager of the Department of Atatürk Principles and History of Revolution Prof. Dr. Mustafa Budak uttered these in his Declaration of Turkish Republic and National Spirit speech: “This year the holiday celebrated with such joy. Hopefully, from now on those holidays will be more joyful, in unity and in solidarity. Because holidays are exceptional days that people, who share the same piece of land that they call homeland, celebrate living in unity independently. In those days people enjoy living in unity at its most. Also, holidays are the most important days that feed the notion of national spirit. Religious holidays let people cherish the joy of being a part of the same religion and national holidays let people have the honour of being a nation. Either way, the national spirit rises.

“They followed their ancestors”

President of the Student Council Emir Alp Turgut stated these: “Today we are here to commemorate Ghazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his fellow fighters, martyries and veterans with thankfulness and yearning. There is also another reason we are here and that is the 57th Regiment and its flag that is one of the symbols of the War of Independence. On April this year, the representative flag of the 57th Regiment has handed over to Istanbul University from Rize Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University with a military ceremony. The handover made it to news many times since then. The shared headline was; ‘They followed their ancestors’. The headline was so accurate. Because we followed our ancestors, grandfathers, gran Şerife. We still follow them and we will continue to do so. Just like their souls were filled with patriotism, we feel the same thing when we see our flag because of the noble blood that we carry in our veins.

“A nation with a deep rooted history cannot be expected to stay away from its spirit”
Political Sciences student Kürşat Mücahit Topçugil pointed out to the dates of rooted national organizations and institutions while celebrating the 96th anniversary of Turkish Republic. Topçugil said that: “While we are celebrating the 96th anniversary of Turkish Republic, The Grand National Assembly is 99, The Red Crescent in Turkey is 151, Constabulary is 174, Post Office Department is 179, Fire Department is 305 and the Military is 2200 years old. National spirit is to know our history, culture and live according to it. A nation with a deep rooted history as such cannot be expected to stay away from its spirit.”
The program ended after the photoshoot of IU Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak and participants with the 57th Regiment flag.
