THE SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS

 

History

Istanbul University School of Physical Education and Sports started running its programms in 1998-1999 Academic Year and committed to the provision of high quality education which equip trainers, sports managers, physical educators and sports teachers with confidence, skill and knowledge in sports sciences. Thus, our mission is to train youngsters to fulfill the requirements of their professions efficiently and productively in their future lives.

 

Location

The school is located in the Avcılar Campus of İstanbul University by Lake Küçük Çekmece and the forest. The natural beauty of the area in all four seasons provides the campus a wonderful atmosphere during the whole year.

 

Perspectives in Teaching

The School of Physical Education and Sports (SPES) offers graduate and undergarduate programs in the departments of,
Trainer Education
Sports Management
In these two departments, bachelors’ degrees are awarded on successful completion of a range of credits 191-203, which are accumulated on a period of four years; however, this may be five years with the optional foreign language education. Physical Education and Sports Teaching Deparment was established and will start to accept students in due time.
The first two years, students in both departments follow the same core program. After completion of the core program, students follow their own professional training programs according to their departments that they were allocated during the Entrance Examination of the SPES.

SPES has three elective area programs as Fittnes, Sports News and Disabled Sports Programs with totally 20 credits.
Students from both departments should complete a Graduation Thesis and an Apprentiship before garduation. There is an obligatory camp activity which can be done anytime during the four (five) year of education.

Research

SPES is committed to the highest standards of teaching and research in sports sciences. It has highly motivated academic staff and young teaching staff in different areas of sports that represented İstanbul University and Turkey in national and international competitions.
The academic journal of SPES, titled with Journal of Sports Sciences is aiming to promote publication and scientific qualification of the academic staff.

SPES is highly motivated to establish scientific partnership with universities within the country as well as around the world. There is a joint appointment between the SPES and the Salzburg University, School of Physical Education and Sports in Austria. As a result of this partnership, there have been many visits between the staff to exchange ideas, skills and knowledge.

Language of Instruction 

The main language of instruction is Turkish.

                              

IT Services

Both departments have compulsory IT courses as a part of their programs.  A self-access center is available for open use of the students. The academic staff of SPES uses e-mail accounts provided by the IT Office. These e-mail addresses can be accessed from the internet.
For teaching purposes each classroom has a PC, projectors, overhead projectors, a laptop with DVD, VCD provided by the administration.

Library

SPES has a small specialized library with a collection of books and periodicals on sports science. The students also use the main university Library, which has a comprehensive collection. The academic staff and students have access to electronic libraries and database provided by Istanbul University at all times from any computer.

Campus Life

SPES hosts almost 400 students most of whom have active sports life in national and international levels. SPES’s teams on different sports branches for female and male (basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, tennis, badminton, and soccer) are successful in Annual University Sports Festivals.

Accommodation and Dining Services

Avcılar Dormitory accommodates 1500 students. There are other state dormitories and private residence halls located around the campus. SPES has a small canteen and there are also various locations on campus where food service is available.

Medical Service

 

The medico-Social is a campus service center for all students at İstanbul University. Other health facilities include two of the medical schools of the University offering furter treatments.

Accessibility

 

SPES building unfortunately is not efficiently accessible yet for the physically challenged students. However, most of the University buildings in the campus are accessible.
