Department of Public Administration The public administration department of the Faculty of Political Sciences is one of the foremost academic centers of the cited discipline in Turkey. The discipline of public administration analyzes the process of political decision making and policy implementation in an administrative system. Its subject matter includes the institutional setting and the administrative apparatus at the local or national level, and deals with policy implementation in those specific levels. That is to say the discipline of public administration contributes to our understanding of political, social and economic transformations occurring at the local, national and even international level. The Department of Public Administration consists of six sub-departments: 1. Legal Sciences 2. Administrative Sciences 3. Urbanization and Environmental Issues 4. Political and Social Sciences 5. Public Finance 6. Economics
This department aims at educating students who are equipped with contemporary knowledge and ability, who can critically observe conditions and developments both in homeland and abroad, to be employed in administrative bodies, in private sector and government.
Students of this department take several classes in public administration, public and fiscal law, political science and particularly, on the system of Turkish administration. Moreover, students also attend lectures on economics, the role of state in economic life, financial matters on the efficient use of public resources, business administration dealing with problems raised by the rapid technological changes and globalization. The future candidates of public administration especially need to be informed of the most recent developments in their specific field; elective courses are therefore included in the schedules of third and fourth year students in order to enrich their general academic knowledge and their grasp of the modern world. Furthermore, an English prep class was added in 2007 for those students who are not proficient in English. As a part of Istanbul University Enstitute of Social Sciences, Public Administration Department carries out an M.A. program that contains both compulsory and elective courses. The program must be completed in two years; students are allowed to pursue coursework in the first year and write a thesis in the second. Public Administration Department M.A. Program aims training the students for profesionalizational and researchin this area. This program is designed not only for students working in public administration to deepen their knowledge but also for numerous other professional researchers in this discipline. Additionally PhD program in Public Administration has been renewed and opened since the 2007-2008 academic year after a break caused by the departmental issues.
