Department of International Relations Students of this department are educated in a wide variety of courses ranging from national and international politics to their connections with legal, historical and socio-economic relations aiming to equip them with an interdisciplinary approach to international studies and politics much needed in an ever changing global world. Providing a sound introduction to the ideas, controversies and ideological traditions that have shaped modern political thought is sought through the study of essential concepts of political theory, accounts of the origins and historical development of international political thought, and an exposition of political and economic history. The interdisciplinary character of the department is well reflected in its sections which are “International Relations”, “Political Science”, “International Law”, and “Political History”. Since 1999-2000 academic year the department has started an English language- reinforced education. Elective courses enrich the curriculum of third and fourth year students.
Graduate Programmes in International Relations
MA and Ph.D Programmes in International Relations aim to develop and deepen the students’ critical understanding of international relations and politics in an age of fast globalization which besides giving new dimensions to the official relations between the nation states also moves beyond them and adds another dimension, namely that of the civil relations. These programmes draw on history –both Ottoman-Turkish and world- , politics, international relations theory, and law to give the students an overall and in-depth knowledge of their chosen field leading them right to the frontier of research.
Students will benefit from the research and teaching activities of the Department while living in culturally and environmentally one of the most attractive cities in the world and study in the charming historic campus of Istanbul University in the heart of the city.
