Istanbul University, as one of the oldest and the best-known educational institutions of Turkey, was founded in 1453. Having reconstructed in 1900 under the name of Dar al-Funun al-Shahane, a branch of theology was founded in the University. In 1924 the legal entity of Dar al-Funun was introduced with act of Tevhid-i Tedrisat (Unification of the education system) and the higher part of madrasahs was transferred to The Faculty of Theology after having attached to the Ministry of Education. With the university reform in 1933, Dar al-Funun was renamed as the University of Istanbul and the Faculty of Theology was assigned to the Institute of Islamic Studies. Nevertheless, The Faculty of Theology was reinstituted within the structure of the University of Istanbul in 1992 and then started to accept students again in 1996. The Faculty consists of Bachelor, Master and Doctorate degrees. For the purpose of having proficiency in teaching, there is a certification programme in pedagogy. Distance Education Programme (ILITAM) which allows students to extramural studies in bachelor level has been opened since 2010-2011.    

The mission of the Faculty is to graduate educated-theologians who learn Islam from its essential sources, who lead the society in moral issues and contribute to live together in diversity; to research and to support this kind of studies. The vision of the faculty is to be a faculty of theology leading in national base and being distinguished in international arena.

Administration and Internal-Structure

The University and the Faculty have a kind of administrative mentality aimed to be equitable and social in education; to give an equal opportunity to students and to arrange suitable places for them to study in modern structures. The faculty is located in Saraçhane, a historical center, which is known as Suriçi district. In addition to main building of the faculty, three new buildings are still under the construction. There are research centers nearby not-yet-completed-library of the faculty such as Suleymaniye Library, Beyazıt Devlet Library, Main Library of The University of Istanbul, Topkapı Place Library, Millet Library and Archeology Museum Library which all contain world-wide known and unique manuscripts. The faculty is located in Fatih district which is one of the richest historical and cultural centers of Istanbul. There are lots of historical, cultural and art centers, such as Suleymaniye, Fatih, Shehzade, Pertevniyal Valide Mosques and complexes and Ottoman archives, Ragib Pasha and Atif Efendi Libraries, Topkapi Palace Museum, Grand Bazaar, Hagia-Sophia,Kiztasi (Maiden’s Stone) Bozdogan Aqueduct, Amcazade Huseyin Pasha Madrasa, The Remains of Ayios Poliektus Monastery.

Curriculum

The Faculty of Theology at the University of Istanbul has started English programme in bachelor level since 2010-2011. This programme is being conducted within the structure of the Faculty of Theology. The programme consists of 150 credits in four years after having one-year-preparation in English. Fifty students will be accepted to this programme by OSYM (Selection and Placement of Students in Higher Education Institutions in Turkey) in 2010-2011. The language of the programme is English. And also foreigner students will be accepted. Moreover, there are courses in Arabic and Turkish.

Aims of the Programme

The aims of the Bachelor English Programme of Theology are: To give foreign students who wants to study in their language an opportunity to have a higher level religious education in Turkey; to give Turkish students who will be employed in various institutions of Turkey, particularly in the Head of Religious Affairs  -where employers who will assume to work abroad will be needed- an opportunity to have a higher level religious education in their own country; to educate researchers and academicians who will be able to work in foreign language; to educate theologians who have objective and scientific perspective and also who are capable to develop international academic relations of Turkey. 

Careers / Job Opportunities

Graduated students will be entitled as “English Faculty of Theology graduates”. With this title, they will have the qualification of higher-educated-religious-employee particularly in abroad missions within the structure of the Religious Affairs Department. Moreover, they can provide educated-in-English academic personals in faculties of theology. They will also be benefited other job opportunities that regular graduated students have. Turkish students who are accepted to the programme may utilize the formation of teaching-training.
