Foreign Language Studies
The students of Istanbul University begin their studies in foreign languages at the Department of Foreign Languages and further these studies at their respective faculties or colleges. The Department of Foreign Languages, which was given a wider scope and restructured from 1999 onwards, offers high quality education in its field with a variety of programs available, and using the latest techniques applied by specialized lecturers experienced and qualified in their subject. There are several courses:
Compulsory Preparatory Courses
Those students planning to attend departments that use a foreign language, either in part or in whole, are obliged to take compulsory courses in languages. Students admitted to these departments are first put through an evaluation test and then attend courses at their appropriate level for one academic year.
Voluntary Preparatory Courses
Students who enroll at voluntary preparatory courses are trained at the Department of Foreign Languages for the duration of one academic year.
Programs for which a Preparatory Course is Noncompulsory
Those students entitled to study in a program that does not necessitate a preparatory course can enroll for a foreign language certificate program. Students have to take a foreign language examination given by the University. Students successful in this exam are exempt from foreign language courses. The rest have to attend compulsory courses in foreign languages at the Department of Foreign Languages for one academic year.
Certificate Programs in Foreign Languages
After completing compulsory foreign language courses, students can enroll at certificate programs on foreign languages at the Department of Foreign Languages. The certificate programs cover preparatory, intermediate, or advanced level in German, French or English. Having completed these programs, students are awarded qualification certificates.
Turkish as a Foreign Language Program
The program in Turkish is available for foreign students enrolled at Istanbul University. Students of foreign nationality are offered courses in Turkish in accordance with the level of their knowledge in Turkish.
