The aim of Istanbul University Faculty of Science Department of Mathematics is to give the fundamental knowledge to the students who interest in further study about mathematics and the related areas of mathematics ; to apply the programmes which are useful for the students after graduate period. Furthermore in the process of professional work and research to train undergraduate level of mathematicians who have contemporary level of scientific capable of thought and research.
In Mathematics Department; in general improving the capability of "scientific thinking" , in particular training students who can make academic research about pure mathematics and applied mathematics are aimed.
Deparment of Mathematics consist of 6 subdivisions: They are "Analysis and Functional Theory ", "Algebra and Number Theory", "Geometry", "Topology", "Applied Mathematics", "Foundations of Mathematics and Logic".Furthermore, there are 4 professors, 1 associate professor, 9 assistant professors and 12 research assistants.
Besides formal education , since 2009-2010 academic year it has been second education as well. Undergraduate education takes four years. In addition to an undergraduate programme in our Institute of Science, there are Graduate and Ph.D programmes. Department of Mathematics conducts the mathematics courses of the other deparments in Faculty of Science and the fundamental mathematics courses of the other faculties in addition to the courses of its own students. Since 2009-2010 academic year, it has been given formation courses to our students.
Our graduated students can work as a research assistant in universities; beside this, they can also work as an insurer,banker, IT specialist or an officer in public institutions and organizations, and also when they satisfy the conditions which are determined by the Ministry of Education, they can work as a teacher in secondary education.
