We are proud of being members of the oldest university of our country.
Our department came into existence on the 1st of July 1933 with the establishment of İstanbul University following the University Reform of 1933. Up to this day it has set an example in the establishment of the physics departments of many universities and continues to do so.
The vision of the physics department is to make our department, in the field of physics, an internationally recognized, preferred and acknowledged department. Part of the vision is to keep up with current research in the world, in the field of physics by the education of researcher physicists and to implement this research in our department and to improve it. In recent years, research is directed towards original and new areas, in addition to fundamental physics. In this respect, the support given by the Scientific Research Projects Division, as part of national projects, is very important. The level of research is maintained also by international projects.
35 undergraduate level and 46 graduate level courses are offered in our department. Besides, the faculty members of our department give service courses to other departments in our faculty and to the faculties of Engineering, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Literature, Aquaculture and Forestry as well as to the Air Force Academy. Our faculty members provide education service to approximately 6000 students. This number has risen with the beginning of after-hours education in our department, in the 2009-2010 academic year. All of these activities regarding education and research are undertaken by 12 professors, 9 associate professors, 15 assistant professors, 24 research assistants and 3 physicists.
We keep working with all our might, with due attention to the needs of our country, to survive in the changing and developing world and to adapt ourselves to technology. We have the power and are equipped well enough to accomplish this.
