Istanbul University Robotic Astrophysics Observatory
Istanbul University Robotic Astrophysics Observatory Project was submitted to meet the nocturnal photometric observation needs. For this purpose a carbon fiber structured Ritchey-Chrétien telescope with f/8 focal ratio and 60 cm mirror diameter was requested. The detector which will be attached to the telescope is a CCD (Charge Coupled Device) with dimensions 2k × 2k. Johnson's wide band (UBVRI) and Strömgren's middle band filter sets will be used in the project. These filter sets will be especially used in determining the temperatures, photometric metal abundances and luminosity classes of stars. The filter wheel in the project is 9 slotted. In order for the fully automated dome to be aware of meteorological conditions (humidity, rain, snow, wind) a meteorology station will be set up. The telescope will be installed in the Ulupınar Observatory of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University. The reasons for this are: Istanbul's nocturnal observation quality (altitude, light pollution, etc.) is not suitable, there is an available dome and a building where the telescope can be placed in the Ulupınar Observatory, Ulupınar Observatory is closer to Istanbul when compared with other places with suitable observation qualities and infrastructure and maintenance support will be given by Ulupınar Observatory.
Researches:
- To provide a telescope which can make nocturnal observations to Istanbul University,
- To make nocturnal observations in the Department, where only solar observations are conducted, which will decrease the dependence to other observatories regarding this subject,
- To acquire original observational data,
- To conduct projects with scientific purpose,
- To produce common projects between the workgroups in the Department and in Çanakkale,
- To collaborate with international workgroups,
- To provide fresh information to the literature by using the obtained observational data,
- To raise yearly publications above 10,
- To provide opportunities to students who will make observation based M. S. and Ph. D. theses,
- To educate undergraduate students in making nocturnal observations,
- To inform the public through projects like Children's University and Summer Schools,
- To prepare and to obtain experience for larger observatories.
