Marine Zooplankton: My primary research focuses on marine zooplankton, particularly
mesozooplankton. I am interested in zooplankton dynamics of the highly
stratified Marmara basin. The permanent and strict thermohaline
stratification of the basin causes major differences in zooplankton species
assemblages of the Sea of Marmara when compared to neighboring basins, such
as high zooplankton abundance and dominance of Cladocera over Copepoda. I
study the differences in species assemblages and community structure and try
to explain the variations by detailed environmental parameters using
multivariate approaches. I have also studied impacts of recent Liriope
tetraphylla (Trachymedusa) invasion on zooplankton communities. Noctiluca scintillans: This large
heterotrophic dinoflagellate is among the most important competitors of
mesozooplankton and frequently causes massive blooms in the Marmara Sea. I am
following spatiotemporal and vertical variations in distribution of the
species as well as changes in the condition of cells (using diameter length
and food vacuoles). Statistics: My studies on
zooplankton generally involved statistical and multivariate approaches to
link species assemblages and community structure to environmental
variability. I am highly familiar with PRIMER and CANOCO routines, and also
SPSS, Statistica and R. Marine Biodiversity: I am a member of OCEANOS scientific diving team.
