Undergraduate Studies

Istanbul University has a modern approach towards the education of its 50 000 students studying at undergraduate level. It is an institution of higher education conscious of universal values, aiming at training secularist, democratic, creative, productive, and active individuals. It offers higher education in a great variety of fields ranging from sciences to engineering, from social sciences to medical sciences.

Istanbul University has adopted a system of education in which application and theory coexist and are simultaneously implanted in the students. We are cooperating with industrial institutions on a number of projects and thus participating in social productivity. Moreover, we are also a leading institution in the field of medicine with the health services that we provide.

The diplomas received from the various faculties and colleges of Istanbul University are acknowledged on an international level. With their Istanbul University diplomas, our alumni pursue their education successfully in the United States of America and Europe.

Two educational programmes, organized and subsidiary, are implemented at our university. Organized education takes place during the day, while subsidiary education is undertaken in the evenings. There is no difference in quality between the contents and teaching staff of the two systems.

Within the framework of the restructuring that began in the 1998-1999 academic year, undergraduate education is based on a credit and term system. The curve system is used in the evaluation of examination results. According to this system, students' achievement is calculated in relation to the level of achievement of other students sitting the same examination.

Within the same framework, Istanbul University offers its students a number of openings, such as the opportunity to take double major degrees, to avail themselves of the chance of taking part in student exchange programmes, both national and international, or of registering to summer school programmes.

As Istanbul University is glad to see its students take part in administrative decision-making, it has internalized activities such as student and research assistant representation in faculties and colleges. Faculties and colleges welcome student representatives in their administrative meetings where education related decisions are made, thus giving students a say in the administration. Student and research assistant representatives from medicine, sciences and social sciences have the right to participate and vote on administrative issues.
