The Faculty of Economics is the oldest in its field in Turkey. Among the academic staff of the faculty, which was founded in 1936, there are world famous figures such as Ord. Prof. Umberto Ricci, Ord. Prof. I. Dobretsberger, Ord. Prof. Wilhelm Röpke, Ord. Prof. Fritz Neumark, Ord. Prof. Alexander Rüstow, Ord. Prof. Alfred Issac, and Ord. Prof. Gerhard Kessler. These academics greatly contributed in the founding of the faculty. Education at the faculty covers an eight-term (four year) period. Some departments require a one year preparatory course in English. There
are five departments at the Faculty of Economics. Alumni find professional opportunities in banks, the State Treasury, the State Planning Commission, the State Institute of Statistics, and the Central Bank, or in the private sector, as administrators, specialists, inspectors, or researchers, depending on their field of interest. The Department of Finance aims to equip students who wish to become top administrators with the necessary accumulation of knowledge. In their first undergraduate years, students are taught courses that are basic to the study of economics, in cooperation with other departments. In later years, the focus is on the science of finance. Some of the courses taught in this field are public expenditure, state debts, budget, taxation, the financing of municipal administrations, financing policies, and other financial systems. Our alumni find work as bank inspectors, finance inspectors at the Ministry of Finances, and accountants. The Department of Economics in English has, as its main function, the teaching of the basics of economics. The curriculum is organized to attentively cover the crucial areas in economics and mathematics. As the department aims to train its students from the cultural point of view as well, a number of elective courses are available that appeal to the students’ personal interests and abilities. In addition to the high quality education provided, students also receive an adequate knowledge of English. This enables them to have a wider range of choice in their professional lives, and to compete in better conditions in the business arena. There is a preparatory language course at the department for students whose English is insufficient. The Department of Economics aims to prepare students who wish to work as top administrators in the public and private sectors of the Turkish economy. Education focuses on basic concepts of economics and the economy of Turkey. During their first year, students are taught accountancy, law, sociology, and management as well as the basic concepts of economics. During their second year, they take courses such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, and management administration. This is followed, in their third year, by courses on the theory and politics of money, banking, the theory of international economics, financial accountancy, decision techniques, and financial analysis. In their third year, the programme focuses on courses such as economic development, industrial economics, economic growth, and international money and financial administration. The Department of Work Economics and Industrial Relations focuses its research and teaching activities on social issues, and especially on the relationships between workers and employers in social services. The department teaches basic economics as well as issues related to human life in social and working environments, stressing their social, legal, and economic aspects. Some of the subjects dealt with are industrial relations, labour legislation, social security, social politics, urbanization, ecological issues, worker-employer relations, unionism, the management of collective negotiations and human resources, wages, employment, productivity, and the social structure of Turkey. There is a one-year compulsory English language preparation course at the Department. Our alumni find the opportunity for careers as inspectors, specialists, and top administrators in the private sector, as well as in banks, firms, and trade unions. They can also work as inspectors and specialists of industrial relations in state institutions, especially the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. The Department of Econometrics was the first department of its kind in Turkey when it was established at the Istanbul University Faculty of Economics. Its aim is to teach the most efficient methods for solving the economic problems of our country. The department offers students a series of courses to be completed in a four-year period. The schedules comprise such areas as macro and micro theories, and a variety of econometric methods. Research methods, statistics, applied econometrics are also taught at the department. There is a oneyear voluntary English language class.
