The institute was founded in 1982 and the
fields it covers are marine biology, chemical
oceanography, physical oceanography, marine
geology and geophysics, coastal engineering,
management of coastal areas, marine and coastal
defence, and marine economics and policies. The
institute carries out research projects on the seas
surrounding Turkey and offers M.A. and doctorate
programmes in the fields

mentioned.
The institute pursues oceanographic field work
on the Research vessel ARAR which is equipped
with the necessary instruments. The chemistry,
biology, sedimentology, distance sendetection and
GIS laboratories affiliated to the institute carry
out work on standard specimen production, data
operating, and experiments.
| Analytical equipments,
Atomic Absorbtion Spectrophotometers (AAS),
Gas Chromotography (GC), Gas Chromotography
and Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS), FTIR and UV
spectrophotometers, spectrofluorometers, autoanalyzers,
filtering equipments, microscopes, and distance
detectors and computer facilities for GIS applications
are among the apparatus available.
A large number of projects are under way at
the institute. These include the effects on the
Marmara and Black seas and the Bosphorus of
the discharges from Istanbul, environmental
problems resulting from accidents and oil pollution,
shallow seismic studies, the follow up of pollution
resulting in the Izmit bay as an aftermath of the
August 17, 1999 earthquake, fish stocking work,
studies in topography and sedimentology, and the
application to marine sciences of distance detection.
These studies have been very beneficial to maritime
sciences in Turkey. |
