The Institute was founded in 1982. Students from the faculties of Istanbul Medicine, Cerrahpafla Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, and Pharmaceutics,
and the Florence Nightingale Nursing Training School, as well as those from the university institutes of Cardiology, Child Health, Oncology, Experimental Medical Research, Neurological Sciences, Pulmonary Diseases, and Tuberculosis, do their M.A. and Ph.D. studies here.
The duration of the M.A. programme is four terms, while that of the doctorate programme is eight terms. An additional maximum period of two terms for M.A, and four Terms for Ph.D. is allowed. The aim of the institute is to equip students with skills needed for independent research, the comprehensive questioning, examination, and interpretation of scientific facts, and reaching new syntheses. M.A. and Ph.D. programmes aim to allow students to make new discoveries in science, to develop new scientific methods, and to apply these to new areas, and thus to train as integrating and propagating scientists. The institutes functions in the training of academic staff and educated, qualified personel equipped with scientific criteria for industrial and production centres.
