The Faculty of Letters dates back to 1865.
The institution, which took the title of Faculty
of Letters when Atatürk founded Istanbul University
in 1933, then accelerated its efforts in education,
research, and publication in conditions felicitous
to its development, and has become the leading
faculty in Turkey in its particular field.
Our faculty is conscious that it has active
responsibilities and functions in Turkeys development,
in the nations progress in the region, and in the
keeping of the peace in the country. Our pursuits
and efforts, as well as the activities of our
Research and Application centres are cultivated
with these aims in mind.
Another characteristic of the faculty is its possession
of a General Library and 18 departmental libraries
housing a wide-ranging collection. The Faculty
of Letters, which offers training in a wide variety
of subjects, regularly publishes 20 periodicals.

The building that the Faculty of Letters shares
with the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Aquatic
Sciences, is the joint work of Prof. Emin Onat,
architect of the Atatürk mausoleum, and Prof.
Sedad Hakki Eldem, one of the most prominent
names of the Second National Architectural Period.
In general, international relationships are cultivated
through academic conventions, conferences, the
exchange of teaching staff, and reciprocal survey
and research trips. Archeological excavations can
also be cited as extremely fertile activities within
these relationships. The international excavations
undertaken and participated in with the license
given by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs constitute
a source of annual gratification for our institution.
The Faculty of Letters consists of 42 departments
dispensing independent diplomas. We offer a
double major programme to enable our students
to be trained in a second field of their choice
and to gain further professional opportunities.
Courses are of eight terms duration (four years).
A years preparatory training is compulsory for
the departments of Contemporary Greek Language
and Literature and Russian Language and Literature.
The Section of Turkish Language and Literature
consists of five departments: the main subjects
include the origins of the Turkish language, its
literature, development, dialects, ancient inscriptions,
and Turkish folklore.
The Section of History implements a common
departmental programme. There are seven
departments in the section. History is scrutinized
from antiquity to the present and research done
on this subject.
The Section of Geography has four departments
and they share the same programme. Students
attend courses and go on field trips for practice.
