The College of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation was initially a department of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine and became an independent college in 1997. Medical rehabilitation is defined as “the efforts to normalize the physical and mental health of disabled people, and to provide them with jobs and a social and professional place in society.” The college follows these standards to train physiotherapists
cognizant in basic medicinal knowledge and having reinforced this knowledge with clinical learning and skills, able to bring modern, qualified solutions to the problems of their society and the individuals therein. Training takes eight terms (four years). The first year is devoted to fundamental medicine. The second year is spent learning evaluation methods in physiotherapy and exercises used in treatment. Third year studies focus on specific rehabilitation techniques and approaches to individual patient rehabilitation, with an emphasis on applied work. The last year is devoted to clinical work. On the protection of social health level, physiotherapists help healthy people by teaching them posture improving exercises and techniques. They are involved with patients in the treatment phase and improve the quality of life and independence of these individuals through the special techniques that they know. Alumni of this college can work in a number of positions, such as university hospitals, private hospitals, sports clubs, retirement homes, and treatment centres for Down’s Syndrom sufferers.
