The College of Social Sciences offers a
four-term (two years) programme established to
satisfy the demand of the services sector and train
qualified personel. Education is organized with
the aid of an advisory committee which includes
representatives from the sectors involved. Alongside
the teaching staff, specialists in their fields also
instruct the students. Thus, the technical, technological,
applications and systems innovations in the sectors
are immediately implemented in the training.
There are seven specific programmes available
in the college, and theory and application are
taught simultaneously. Students are expected to

train for six to twelve weeks during the summer.
They are also offered a voluntary year’s course
in English language learning.
All students learn Windows, Word, and Excel
programmes during training. Students taking
Accountancy learn LOGO, students taking Market
Research and Advertising learn SPSS, students
taking Tourism Management learn Galileo and
Homacs, and Foreign Trade students learn the
Customs and Foreign Trade (Ulukom) programmes.
The Banking Programme is the result of an
agreement between Istanbul University, the Garanti
Bank, the Yap› ve Kredi Bank, Akbank, and
Vak›flar Bank and was established in 1989. The
regular programme is supplemented by night
school. During training students are expected to
work at diverse sections of banks, such as the
treasury, individual operations, and operations.
Alumni work at state-owned and private banks.
The Foreign Trade and EU Programme began
teaching during the 1989-1990 academic year and
aims to train personel for the foreign trade sector
in accordance to an agreement reached between
Istanbul University and the Istanbul Trade Chamber.
The regular programme is supplemented by night
school. Alumni can work in firms dealing in
foreign trade, at exchange offices in banks, with
customs commission agencies, and at removal
firms, and, if they succeed in the necessary
examinations, use the title “Assistant Customs
Cunsultant”in possession of “B” licences.
The Accountancy Programme was established
in 1989 as the Accountancy and Tax Applications
Programme. The regular programme is supplemented
by night school. Alumni work in accountancy
offices as assistants to independent accountants,
financial accountants, and chartered financial
consultants. Alumni who take a four-year training
programme can also enter examinations offered
by the Chamber of Independent Accountants and
Financial Consultants and those who are successful
receive the title of “Independent Accountant”.
The Programme for Market Research and
Advertising was founded as the result of a
cooperation between the university and the sector
to cater for the demands of the latter. The
Advisory Committee consists of representatives
from the Association of Customers of Advertisement,
the Association of Advertisers, the Association
of Market and Public Opinion Researchers, the
Association of Coordination and Publicizing, and
various members of the press. Alumni work in
the fields of market research and advertising, and
at press institutions.
The Insurance Programme was established in
1989 as a result of a protocol signed jointly by
Istanbul University and the Association of Turkish
Reinsurance Companies. The regular programme
is supplemented by night school. The aim of the
programme is to train staff for the insurance
sector. Alumni can work at insurance firms and
the insurance-related offices of banks, or at
insurance agencies. They can also form their own
insurance agencies.
The Programme of Tourism Management was
established in the 1986-1987 academic year as
a result of a protocol signed by Istanbul University,
TUGEV (the Foundation for Tourism Development
and Education), and TÜROB (the Association of
Turkish Hoteliers). Since 1995, Turkish Airlines,
TÜRSAB (the Association of Turkish Travel
Agencies) and TÜRSAV (the Foundation of
Turkish Travel Agencies) support the programme
in giving students the opportunity of specializing
in either accommodation or travel agencies. The
regular programme is supplemented by night
school. Alumni can find a number of posts in
accommodation, travel agencies, catering services,
tour operator companies, transportation firms,
congress, conference and tourism information
centres.
The Programme of Real Estate and Estate
Management was founded in 2000 on the advice
of The Istanbul Trade Chamber. The alumni of
the programme, which is the first of its kind,
will work as “Estate Consultants”. They are
expected to initiate the establishment of a standard
in the profession. Further, a protocol has been
signed with the Appraisal Institute in the United
States of America to inaugurate the training of
“estate evaluation specialists” in a certificate
programme starting in 2001.
