The Istanbul University College of Press
and Distribution was affiliated as the Institute
of Journalism to the Faculty of Economics in
1950, and in 1993, it became the Faculty of
Communications.
The faculty consists of three departments, Journalism,
Publicity and Public Relations, and Radio-Television
and Cinema, offering eight term (four year)
undergraduate programmes. There are also a number
of courses taken jointly by all three departments
to promote the general knowledge of the students.
Students are further offered the chance of attending
voluntary foreign languages courses, for the duration
of one year, in English, German or French. As
the alumni constitute the core cadre much needed
in contemporary society, students are entering a
profession with rich business opportunities, and
select in actuality. Alongside academics, a

of specialized and renowned
professionals also
take part in the training, and thus a cooperation
between the university and the sector is achieved
and theory and practice are intermingled.
The Faculty of Communications, which fulfills
the role of training specialized staff that the mass
media needs, is continually developing its structure.
Students have the opportunity to train at the I.U
News Agency, Academedia, and the Public
Relations Group and they can also be active at
the Iletim newspaper and the Istanbul University
Radio and Television Network. The Iletim
newspaper and the 4th Dimension Culture and
Art Magazine are being published through the
Istanbul University website on the internet.

The Department of Journalism conducts an
education aimed at teaching the process, from
the source of the news story to its printing, of
the publication of the press. A number of famous
journalists supplement the courses taught by
academics, and thus students get to experience
application as well.
The Department of Radio-Television and
Cinema aims to train qualified staff for the mass
media, especially radio and television, and is a
department that teaches subjects in communications
that provide specialization in the understanding
of social, political, and

economic events.
The Department of Publicity and Public
Relations trains students in the fields of publicity,
public relations, and advertisement. It trains staff,
for the private and public sectors, that will
publicize the institution, produce and develop its
image in society, and conduct relations that will
be beneficial for the firm.
