The faculty was founded in the 1880's and is one of the foundation stones of the university. Until other universities established their faculties of Law, ours was the first to train young jurists. After the University Reform of 1933, with the contribution of academics fleeing the Nazi regime, the principles of contemporary legal education originated and were developed at this institution. Many prominent and well-known figures, famous academics such as Prof. Andreas Schwarz, Prof. Ernst E. Hirsch, Prof. Sıddık Sami Onar, many judges, politicians, lawyers, writers, and journalists feature in the annals of the faculty. The academic staff of our faculty is proud of this heritage and aims to retain and promote the tradition of high quality education of the institution.
During their eight-term (four years) education, the aim is to teach students the basis of legal concepts, and to instruct them in approaching legal issues with an analytical and critical eye.
Under the framework of public law, they read such basic subjects as constitutional and punitive law,and within the structure of specialized law they are responsible for subjects like laws of obligation and trade law. There are also elective courses available on developing and contemporary legal issues on the programme of the faculty.
Our faculty possesses the most comprehensive legal library in Turkey, with a rich collection of periodicals and books. Our academic staff regularly publish the results of their research in the form of articles and books and are thus influential in the development of Turkish law. Moreover, many academics are working on an international platform and are influential in relations with foreign academic institutions.
Many student clubs are active within the faculty, and some of these clubs give students the opportunity to do their training abroad. On the other hand, students take part in international mock tribunals and benefit from academic staff support in their preparations.
