Faculty of Engineering

Faculty of Engineering was founded in 1981. Schooling is eight terms (four years), and there are 14 departments, some programmes offering voluntary preparaory courses in the English language. Department of Computer Engineering is multifaceted. The programme is predominantly designed to train students in the field of software engineering and follows a parallel course to the programmes of American Technical Colleges.
There is a compulsory year of English language learning and 30% of all courses are taught in English. Department of Environmental Engineering teaches a field which is becoming increasingly important. The aim is to train engineers who will establish the necessary disinfection units that will decontaminate environmental and industrial waste, produce recommendations for their being put to use and control this process, realize the safe annihilation of solid waste, work for the cleansing of fresh water and the development of water sources, develop standards for and apply environmental engineering, coordinate the evaluation of environmental effects, and conduct the necessary chemical and biological analyses in laboratory conditions. Students are offered a year's voluntary course in English language learning.
Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering teaches an important field for a country surrounded on three sides by seas. The aim is to use modern technology to train engineers who are familiar with the dispatching and administration of ships, the usage and management of ship machinery, and the maritime management and port administratiom. Students are taught basic engineering courses during their first four terms. During the following four terms, students choose the study of maritime administration, maritime machinery management or maritime transportation and management.
Students are offered a voluntary year's course in English language learning. Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering teaches the production of electrical energy, conductivity and applications in electronics and computering. The working language is English and students whose English is not adequate are offered ayear's course in English language. Department of Electronics Engineering aims to train staff able to work in international conditions. The working languages are English and Turkish. There are both compulsory and elective courses, the latter opt which are designed to cater for the fields of interest of the students. There is a year's compulsory course in English language learning. 30% of courses are taught in English. Departments of Electrical-Electronics Engineering and Electronics Engineering will merge in the 2001-2002 academic year to become the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering. The working language will be Turkish. The Department of Industrial Engineering is equipped to approach all processes of production from a stance of systems engineering, to plan, apply, control, and realize this through organizational transformation. The department differs from others in two aspects: the field of quality is approached with a stress on “Cummulative Quality Administration” and this is offered in a two-year programme, and the educational process is sponsored by successful industrial establishments and a bridge towards application is built during training. Students can take a one-year voluntary course in the English language. The Department of Construction Engineering aims to give a modern education in the fields of building, transportation, geotechnics and hydrolics. This is a field in engineering that arose out of human needs and continues to promote the individual and social standing of humans, making use of current technology. The Department of Geophysical Engineering computes the magnitude of the material constituting the globe according to their various physical characteristics, both on site and in the laboratory and aims thus to produce an in-depth picture of the structure of the deep inner layers of the earth. Not only does the science of geophysics enable us to find economic treasures such as oil, metals, and underground water sources, but, through siesmology and other geophysical disciplines, it also helps us understand the development of the earth by studying the planet in depth. The field is also involved in our analysis of the inner structures of the moon and the planets. Another area in which the department is interested is the safe storage under ground of waste products that harm the environment. A great deal of emphasis is put on the study of the subjects of terrestrial physics, siesmology, and the application of geophysics. The Department of Geological Engineering trains engineers who conduct ground studies for the foundations of tunnels, dams, bridges, highways, factories and houses, and investigate underground water sources, various metal-, coal-, salt-, and oil-beds. The Department of Chemistry instructs in the fields of analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physical chemistry. The curriculum is prepared with an eye for the teaching of both theoretical chemistry studies and practical and technical training. There is a one-year voluntary preparatory course in English language learning. The Department of Metal Engineering aims offering an education in the finding of metal ores both under the ground and on the surface, the enrichment of these, and their preparation for usage in industry. The Department of Mechanical Engineering aims to produce engineers who will be able to follow the intense technological developments in the field, understand and solve, through synthesis, the problems faced by industry, and who are aware of the fundamental and applied principles of science needed to develop technologies related to the field. The emphasis is given to projects, and computer supported studies are important. There is a one-year voluntary preparatory course in English language learning. The Department of Metalurgical and Material Engineering offers courses in production metalurgy, the science of materials, and ceramics- refractors. There is a one-year voluntary preparatory course in English language learning.
