There are eight departments in the Faculty of Economics. There are two Economics Deparments where teaching is conducted in English in one and in Turkish in the other. The other six are Department of Labor Economics and Industrial Relations, Department of Public Finance, Department of Econometrics, Department of Political Science and International Relations, Department of Business Administration, and Department of Tourism Management.
The Department of Economics (teaching conducted in English) where the medium of instruction is English was founded in 1985. The fundamental objective of the department is to provide undergraduate students with a thorough understanding of economic principles. The graduate of the department should hope to follow various economic issues and phenomena and the related discussion and analysis. To this end the curriculum embodies a rigorous treatment of the major fields in economics and quantitative techniques. The program also aims at broadening the intellectual scope of students by providing them with a range of electives that they can choose from, depending on their personal interests and aptitudes. In designing the program the department has taken care to keep the number of required courses within the minimum level of university requirements so as to provide students with different options and not to overburden them.
The Department of Economics where teaching is conducted in Turkish has set its primary objective as the enhancement of students’ lifelong knowledge and experiences. Acquiring an appreciation of various approaches to the acquisition of knowledge through exposure to economics, mathematics and social sciences enables students to strengthen their ability to reason and cope with new situations. In designing the program, the department has focused on how the basic techniques of economic analysis provide a framework which can be used to help understand any society.
The Department of Labor Economics and Industrial Relations focuses its research and education activities on labor economics, social policy, and employee-employers relations. This department is the oldest and well-established institution in its area in Turkey. The focus of courses taught is on the social, legal and economic aspects of working life. The department aims at providing students with relevant information and in-depth knowledge in the field. The Department provides one year compulsory English language preparatory class in order to equip students with better opportunities for market conditions. In the following years 30% of the courses are taught in English.
The Department of Public Finance acts together with the other departments on main subjects such as basic economic theory during the first years of the curriculum, emphasis is given to Public Finance in the subsequent terms. Public Expenditure; Government Debt; Government Budgeting; Taxation; Public Finance of Local Administrations; Fiscal Policy; and theoretical and practical information on various fiscal systems are the main elements of the program. The aim of the department is to provide the student with sufficient knowledge necessary for higher managerial duties, both in the public and private sectors. Students of this department are required to study in the English Preparatory Course for a year. Those who can pass the English Proficiency Examination are exempt from this part of the program. The language of education is Turkish, but English are offered in the program.
The Department of Econometrics where the main areas of teaching and research are operation research, input-output analysis, econometrics, game theory, stochastic processes, mathematical programming, simulation, networks analysis, optimal control and mathematical economics. A strong emphasis is placed on the use of computers and on applications in the professional careers in business, commerce, finance or in general managerial activities. The courses in Econometrics develop the theory of statistics and show how it may be applied to problems that arise in business and economics. Some of the areas covered are probability, estimation and hypothesis testing, regression, time series analysis, sampling, applied econometrics and stochastic modeling.
The Department of Business Administration aims to equip the students with high level managerial skills based on a solid foundation of economics. The department regards it important that the future managers possess the ability to assess the effects of business decisions at the macro scale as well as the micro scale. At every level of the enterprise, managers and employees should make sure that the operations fall within the sphere of legality and justice. Due to this broader view, special emphasis is placed on the synergy created by the support of other disciplines i.e., economics, law, public finance, political science, and industrial economics. The primary difference of the department from various business schools lies in this outlook. In reaction to the detrimental effects of extreme specialisation in the past, the current trend is toward favouring the synergy created by the collaboration of disciplines. The Department provides one year compulsory English language preparatory class in order to equip students with better opportunities for market conditions. After the preparatory class, during the first two years the aim is to build a foundation with economics, mathematics, statistics, and law as well as introducing basic business courses. In the last two years specialisation in various fields of business administration is possible.
The Department of Tourism Management aims to train qualified executives in tourism which has recently become one of the most important industries. The aim of the depatment is to enable its graduates to be employed as managers in administrative positions of accomodation, travel, transportation, congress – conference services and related organizations of the public sector. Students of the program are required to study in the English Preparatory Course for a year. Those who can pass the English Proficiency Examination are exempt from this part of the program. The language of education is Turkish, but English and German are offered in the program.
The Department of Political Science and International Relations: As globalization profoundly transforms the world system, the study of political science and international relations become all the more important for societies in explaining changes and developments occurring around the world. The department of Political Science and International Relations aims provide its students with an understanding of concepts and theories of political science, economics and international relations, as well as political, economic and social history. The objective of the department is to enable its students to attain a high capacity for analyzing current political, economic and social issues in their country and around the world. The program offers classes on the main concepts and theories of Economics, Political Science and International Relations, Political and Diplomatic History, History of Political Thought, Geopolitics, Strategic Analysis and International Economics, Political and Economic History of Turkey as well as classes for foreign language.
