Istanbul University State Conservatory was established in 1914 during Ottoman reign as the first official school of music. It later underwent certain changes and develop to teach theatre, ballet, and opera as well as music. It took its final name in 1986. Conservatory has been the source for the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra and the State Opera and Ballet, and has produced many valuable artists. Leyla Gencer, Ayflegül Sarıca, Verda Erman, Mükerrem Berk, Güner and Süher Pekinel are among the alumni, and figures such as Cemal Reşit Rey, Ekrem Zeki Ün and Adnan Saygun have worked as instructors. Conservatory has retained the tradition acquired through the years and continues to present the world with artists from the new generation. |
Students find the opportunity to gain worldwide renown through shows and conserts organized in accordance with agreements drawn with institutions around the world, and the Conservatory invites guest teachers from abroad to enlarge the scope of education. With the preparatory units, students are initiated in very early youth to allow them to enter an academic career. Operatic Arts Department offers an education of two years' preparation and four years graduate studies, and other Arts Departments offer four years' courses. Education is implemented in the Sections of Dramatic Arts and Music, and in departments affiliated to these two sections. |
