Students' Cultural Centres

Istanbul University conscientiously supports the extracurricular activities of its students, since these are invaluable in the application in life of contemporary education. One concrete example of this concern on the part of the university is the existence of student clubs. Students have the opportunity to actualize their activities both at the Students' Cultural Centres situated at the Beyazit and Avcilar Campuses, and within the faculties or colleges they belong to.

The main characteristic of the Students' Cultural Centre (SCC) affiliated to the Department of Health, Culture, and Sports is that is an environment where students from allfaculties and colleges get a chance to meet each other. Students from diverse subjects get together at SCC clubs and exchange knowledge and experience, put their knowledge into use, and reinforce that knowledge by developing it. Thus the SCC is an effective opportunity offered by Istanbul University for the fostering of communication between students and the academic staff.

The following are some of the clubs active at the SCC in such diverse areas as shows, conferences, panels, discussions, and debates: the Club to Propagate Atatürk's Convictions, the Archeology Club, the Knowledge Club, the Language Club, the Dance Club, the Paper Marbling Club, the Literature Club, the Ecology Club, the Photography Club, the Philosophy Club, the Travel Club, the Folklore Club, the Legal Research Club, the Caricature and Humour Club, the Classical Turkish Music Club, the Music Club, the Art Club, the Film Club, the Social Research Club, the Social Solidarity Club, the Theatre Club, and the History Club. The only prerequisite for becoming a member of a SCC club is to be a student of Istanbul University. Membership registrations take place every year in October. Including faculty and college clubs, more than 200 clubs are active at Istanbul University. Activities organized by the SCC are accessible to all students, including non-members. As well as cinemas and theatre stages at the SCC, computers, video and cine-vision appliances needed for student activities are also available. All student activities and projects not inimical to our principles are supported by our Rectorate, and such activities are also sponsored financially. The SCC also functions as coordinator for national and international activities. Among the traditional activities organized by the SCC are the Istanbul University Culture Days, and the opening and end-of-year festivities of the university.
