Volcanology
(3-1-0) 7th Semester,
elective, (4 ECTS Credits).
Origins of volcanism, sources of heat in the earth,
composition of the earth and the planets,
nomenclature of volcanic rocks, volcanic facies
concept, distinctive features of volcanism in
various tectonic settings, factors affecting the
behavior of magma during eruption, types of volcanic
activity, properties of lava flows: rheology,
morphological features, the mechanism of pyroclastic
eruptions: dynamics and dimensions of eruption
columns, three types of pyroclastic deposits: (1)
pyroclastic fall: interpretation of isopac and
isopleth maps, (2) pyroclastic flows: formed by
column collapse and lava dome collapse (including
ignimbrites and welding) and (3) pyroclastic surges,
volcanic rock (or debris) avalanches, caldera
complexes, resurgent calderas, submarine volcanism:
deep water eruptions, extraterrestrial volcanism,
environmental effects of volcanism, volcanic
hazards, field techniques for studying volcanic
successions.

Computing and Operating Systems
(1-2-0) 3th Semester, compulsory, (3 ECTS Credits).
What a
geologist most needs when he uses computers was the
key point in construction of the content of this
course. The main aim of this course is to make the
students computer literate and encourage them use
the computers in their studies. It consists of three
parts: (1) Microsoft Windows operating system: basic
computer literacy, (2) Microsoft Word, and (3)
Microsoft Excel: construction and formatting of
tables, processing of data, and plotting of
analytical data onto various diagrams.
