Department of Foreign Languages is one of the oldest departments of Istanbul University.  The Department was founded in 1933 and functioned first under the Faculty of Letters and consecutively under the Rectorship with the title of “School of Foreign Languages” until it received the title of “Department of Foreign Languages” in 1983.  The Department offers preparatory education in foreign languages to the students of the faculties, colleges and institutes with its language units of English, German, French and Turkish. The staff of the Department is comprised of the administrational staff, Department Head, vice Heads and the directors of English, German, French and Turkish units, and the teaching staff of four language units, 57 in English, 9 in German, 5 in French and 2 in Turkish units.
Department of Foreign Languages of Istanbul University aims at offering the students of the university a quality foreign language education enabling them to pursue better career opportunities in their future professional lives. 
For this purpose, the Department offers,

  • all students a high level of foreign language proficiency,
  • and the opportunity of learning a second, even a third foreign language, for those who prefer, through its language certificate programs.

For the above goals to be achieved, a high quality foreign language education is offered with

  • a variety of programs,
  • lecturers who are experienced in their fields,
the latest methods of teaching-education
