Emel Ergun was born in 1959 in Istanbul. She completed her secondary education at the Saint-Benoit French Lycee during 1969-1977. She finished her bachelor studies at the French and Latin Languages Department of the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University in 1981. Upon her graduation, she started working as a French-language lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages of Istanbul University. She received her MA with her thesis Structures actancielles en Français et en Turc: Une étude contrastive under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Berke Vardar in 1985. She attended a trainee program designed for French-language teachers at Besançon University in 1987. In 1991, she completed her PhD studies with the submission of her thesis Syntaxe transphrastique et didactique du français under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Nuran Kutlu. During 1991 and 1992 she worked as part of the editorial board of Metis Translation Journal. She was appointed as a teaching assistant to the French Language Teaching Chair at the Foreign Languages Education at the Faculty of Letters of Istanbul University. On December 8th, 1993, she was appointed Assistant Professor to the French Language and Literature Chair at the Western Languages and Literature Department of the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University. She sat for the associate professorship exam on French Language Teaching on November 22nd, 1999, and qualified. In August 2000, she was appointed Associate Professor to the French Language and Literature Chair at the Western Languages and Literature Department. On September 9th, 2002, she transferred to the Chair of Translation and Interpretation in French. She acted as the head of Latin Language and Literature Chair at the Western Languages and Literature Department during 2001-2006. Since May 2000, she is the head of the Chair of Translation and Interpretation in French. In September 2003, she participated in a training program regarding the problems of educational institutions for translators at Rennes II University. On January 3rd, 2006, she was appointed Head of the Language Centre of Istanbul University and then on July 18th, 2007, Head of the Department of Foreign Languages. On November 15th, 2007, she was appointed Professor. Her specialties are syntax, foreign-language teaching, text linguistics and translation education.
